In an interview with UZH News, Balthasar Bickel outlines the direction which research in phase 2 of the NCCR Evolving Language will take: A previously underestimated difference between humans and animals is the extremely high variability of our communication system. This calls for intensified research into the dynamics of language in its spatiotemporal modeling, into the learning mechanisms in its transmission from generation to generation, into comparison with other animals and the measurement of the relevant neural processes.
